While the age-old technologies are often associated with historical periods \u2014 from the neolithic mud-brick domes of Cyprus to ubiquitous structural systems throughout the Roman Empire \u2014 certain architects in the early twentieth century sought to revive them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">In Catalonia, the Modernisme celebrated ceramic vaulting as a uniquely Catalan tradition and aesthetic innovations (such a parabolic vaults) that harnessed the technology to represent the vital endurance and evolution of Catalan culture itself. As it is less commonly known, timbrel vaulting is so closely associated with the region that most continue to use the term &#8220;<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/inspiration.detail.de\/technology-the-catalan-vault-a-historical-structural-principle-with-a-bright-future-106565.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Catalan vault<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">.&#8221; Meanwhile, Le Corbusier&#8217;s famous\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/architizer.com\/blog\/projects\/make-the-road-new-york\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Maisons Jaoul<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0used roughly laid brick to complement his preferred\u00a0<\/span><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">beton brut<\/span><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0(exposed concrete) aesthetic. Eschewing his famous five points, the building&#8217;s rugged brick vaults pointed back to architectural fundamentals, searching for the essence of home as shelter. At the same time, Corb produced an entirely new architectural style, thereby updating the vault in a somewhat &#8220;modern&#8221; iteration.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Today, architects around the world continue to explore the potential of brick and tile vaulting for design. At first glance, the tour-de-force appears to be the artisanal roof \u2014 reinforced ceramic structural system whose eye-catching terracotta hue stands out against the white walls. This young research group has explored the possibilities of designing stable vaults that are not symmetrical using computers and new digital programs. This mortuary chapel pays homage to the Valencian architect\u2019s work. Rough brick vaults and thick limestone walls are softened with wooden accents, diaphanous textiles and filtered lighting.
