The One Drawing Challenge<\/a> is open for entries, and the excitement is building \u2014 who will take home the prizes of $2,500 and global publication? And who will secure a place among the 100 finalists and get themselves featured in the next edition of “100 Drawings That Tell Stories About Architecture<\/a>“? Only time will tell \u2014 to put yourself in the running, submit a drawing to the competition before July 30th<\/strong>:<\/p>\n

Enter the One Drawing Challenge<\/a><\/p>\n

Once you’ve submitted your drawing, you may well be wondering how the winners will be decided, and who will be doing the judging. First, Architizer’s editorial team carefully reviews every submission and shortlists 100 drawings as Finalists. These Finalists will then be reviewed by a stellar cast of practitioners and thought leaders from the worlds of architecture, design, art and technology, each with a special connection to drawing.<\/p>\n

The jury represents those leaders who are actively bringing architecture to the public today, both online and in the built environment. For entrants and winners, this is an opportunity to get their work in front of the people shaping how the world engages with architecture now and in the future.<\/p>\n

Here’s a selection of just some of the influential figures on this year’s One Drawing Challenge jury:<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

James Wines<\/h2>\n

James Wines is a renowned American artist and architect associated with environmental design. Wines is founder and president of SITE, a New York City -based architecture and environmental arts organization chartered in 1970. This multi-disciplinary practice focuses on the design of buildings, public spaces, environmental art works, landscape designs, master plans, interiors and product design. Wines is a strong advocate for hand drawing as a means of architectural representation, and has drawings exhibited in MoMA.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Boryana Ilieva<\/h2>\n

Boryana Ilieva was a co-founder of architectural studio 11AM in Sofia, Bulgaria, developing single-family houses and condo interiors. Today she is fully devoted to artistic investigations of film architecture through the\u00a0Floor Plan Croissant<\/a>\u00a0project, where she extracts floor plans of character houses in notable films. She believes a film’s floor plan forms a ghost matrix around which directors not only build plots, but place hidden messages. Illieva is also a guest lecturer in production design at The National Academy for Theatre and Film Arts in Sofia.<\/p>\n

Wandile Mthiyane<\/h2>\n

Wandile Mthiyane is an Obama Leader, TedxFellow, architectural designer, social entrepreneur and the founder and CEO of Ubuntu Design Group<\/a> (UDG), an architectural organization that focuses on social impact design projects ranging from individual housing to urban design scale. Wandile was selected as one the 200 rising leaders from across Africa to the 2nd cohort of the Obama Leaders: Africa Program, since then he\u2019s work has been featured on several media outlets including Forbes.<\/p>\n

Dan Hogman<\/h2>\n

As an architect, artist, and educator, Dan has developed the capacity to blend digital and traditional media in developing architectural concepts and has exhibited with the SFMOMA, the AIA, and numerous private galleries. Apart from his multidisciplinary design practice, Dan serves as faculty at the AAU San Francisco teaching design and drawing studios.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Bless Yee<\/h2>\n

Bless Yee was the Non-Student Grand Prize Winner of 2020\u2019s One Drawing Challenge<\/a>. She is an architect, artist, and educator based in New York City. Currently Bless is an Associate at Handel Architects \u2014 she has also worked at Pei Cobb Freed & Partners, Sn\u00f8hetta, and has been an adjunct lecturer at the New York City College of Technology. In her personal work she is developing methods of layering hand drawing and physical models with digital tools to depict compelling narratives of social issues.<\/p>\n

Suchi Reddy<\/h2>\n

Suchi Reddy, Founding Principal of Reddymade<\/a>, established her firm in 2002. “Form follows feeling ” is Reddy’ s mantra, and her primary focus and passion is \u201cneuroaesthetics\u201d, the study of how we respond to aesthetic experience. Suchi Reddy is a member of the Van Alen Institute Leadership Council, and Board Member for the Design Trust for Public Space and Storefront for Art and Architecture.<\/p>\n

Amanda Ferber<\/h2>\n

Amanda Ferber is the young architect who founded Architecture Hunter, one of the largest architectural Instagram pages in the world, with over 1.8 million followers. She has already worked with Marcio Kogan, one of the greatest Brazilian architects and also with renowned digital platforms. She is the ambassador of Morpholio, the Sketching app for Architects and designers and also one of the partners of Arquiforma, a Brazilian platform for students.<\/p>\n

Bob Borson, FAIA<\/h2>\n

Dallas architect Bob Borson is widely recognized as the blogger behind Life of an Architect<\/a> \u2014 one of the world\u2019s most popular architectural blogs. As an emerging voice within the architectural community, he has bridged the gap and engaged multiple generations of architects and architectural enthusiasts by sharing his personal experiences, professional practice tips, and anecdotes on what it\u2019s like to work with and be an architect.<\/p>\n

Paul Keskeys, ARB<\/h2>\n

Architizer’s own Paul Keskeys is a registered UK architect, writer and editor based in New York City. A graduate from UCL and the University of Edinburgh, gaining an MArch in Architectural Design with distinction, Keskeys was nominated for the RIAS Silver Medal in 2009. Keskeys is currently the Content Director at Architizer, with features also published in Architectural Digest, PIN\u2014UP Magazine, Archinect, Aesthetica Magazine and PUBLIC Journal.<\/p>\n

Lora Teagarden, AIA, LEED AP BD+C<\/h2>\n

Lora Teagarden is a project architect at RATIO in Indianapolis, IN, a published author, creator of #AREsketches<\/a>, and business owner. She is a 2017 Young Architect Award winner, one of 25 architects to watch in 2019, and the 2019 Chair of the Young Architects Forum. Her passion for the profession drives her to mentor young professionals and volunteer in her community.<\/p>\n

Marc Tsurumaki, AIA<\/h2>\n

Marc Tsurumaki is a Founding Principal of LTL Architects, an award-winning partnership founded in 1997 and located in New York City. LTL Architects was the recipient of the 2007 National Design Award and was recently ranked #3 among design firms in the country by Architect Magazine. Their drawings are featured in the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and the Carnegie Museum of Art. Marc is currently an Adjunct Associate Professor at Columbia University.<\/p>\n

Georg Windeck, RA<\/h2>\n

Georg Windeck is an architect and educator from Berlin, living and working in New York City. He is the author of Construction Matters (2016)<\/a>, a book that discusses how artistic experiments with new building technologies have informed the aesthetics of Modernism. The book is based on his architectural practice and on his research at universities in the Europe and the US, where he taught design studios, art history classes, and advanced seminars in critical theory over the past two decades.<\/p>\n

The judging process for the One Drawing Challenge \u2014 details of which can be found here \u2014 is designed to reflect the multi-faceted qualities of architectural drawings. Our outstanding cast of jurors will be asked to select winning entries based on their communicative and aesthetic qualities, as well as their impact and ability to \u201cgo viral\u201d on social media. Entries that stand out in one or more of the following categories stand a great chance of being a Winner.<\/p>\n
