Not only does the Dutch architectural practice experiment on form to achieve these ends, it also harnesses an array of groundbreaking fa\u00e7ade treatments that dare to stand out. Remarkably, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mvrdv.nl\/en\/news\/mvrdvs-mcube-combines-pearlescent-exuberance-with-contextual-modesty-in-beijing\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">KWG M Cube<\/a>, which is located in the Beijing\u2019s central district of Chongwenmen, is housed within a pearlescent fa\u00e7ade \u2014 a visually striking element and MVRDV\u2019s primary innovation in the construction of this recent project.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-47612 lazy lazy_media_item\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/staging.arc.ht\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/M-Cube-final-small-2.jpg?resize=1852%2C1200&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"1852\" height=\"1200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blog.staging.arc.ht\/wp-content\/uploads\/M-Cube-final-small-2.jpg?w=1852&amp;ssl=1 1852w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blog.staging.arc.ht\/wp-content\/uploads\/M-Cube-final-small-2.jpg?resize=300%2C194&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blog.staging.arc.ht\/wp-content\/uploads\/M-Cube-final-small-2.jpg?resize=768%2C498&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blog.staging.arc.ht\/wp-content\/uploads\/M-Cube-final-small-2.jpg?resize=1024%2C663&amp;ssl=1 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The KWG M Cube is critically located within Beijing\u2019s innermost ring road, next to the Beijing Railway Station, with the Temple of Heaven to the Southwest and Tiananmen and the Forbidden City to the Northwest. The building\u2019s developer, KWG, longed to create a building that would not only stand out from its predominantly beige and grey neighbors, but also use the site&#8217;s square-footage efficiently, creating a significant amount of useable space within a relatively small footprint. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite these wishes, the city government put forward some contradictory requirements: the government preferred a building that would fit in with, rather than stand out from the muted tones of the bustling urban streetscape. With their work cut out for them, MVRDV&#8217;s architects set about designing a building that could satisfy this multiplicity of needs all at once. Ultimately, this challenging context was precisely what led to the impressive pearlescent fa\u00e7ade that now defines the glistening structure.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-47609 lazy lazy_media_item\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/staging.arc.ht\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/M-Cube-final-small-4.jpg?resize=1963%2C1200&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"1963\" height=\"1200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blog.staging.arc.ht\/wp-content\/uploads\/M-Cube-final-small-4.jpg?w=1963&amp;ssl=1 1963w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blog.staging.arc.ht\/wp-content\/uploads\/M-Cube-final-small-4.jpg?resize=300%2C183&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blog.staging.arc.ht\/wp-content\/uploads\/M-Cube-final-small-4.jpg?resize=768%2C469&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blog.staging.arc.ht\/wp-content\/uploads\/M-Cube-final-small-4.jpg?resize=1024%2C626&amp;ssl=1 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to Jacob van Rijs, Principal Architect and Co-Founder of MVRDV, \u201cOur solution allowed us to do exactly what the client and the city wanted: to create an attractive visual statement in which exuberance and modesty go hand in hand.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The 40,000 square-meter, seven-story building, which is cut into two major programmatic sections, rises to 36-meters \u2014 its maximum permitted height, which is unusually tall for this type of mall. The building\u2019s geometric form was generated by cutting the volume at various angles, so as to symbolically orient the fa\u00e7ade towards a few key locations in the city. Additionally, it allowed the architects to create open-air terraces on each level, which look out towards the Forbidden City and Temple of Heaven.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-47614 lazy lazy_media_item\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/staging.arc.ht\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/M-Cube-final-small-19.jpg?resize=936%2C1200&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"936\" height=\"1200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blog.staging.arc.ht\/wp-content\/uploads\/M-Cube-final-small-19.jpg?w=936&amp;ssl=1 936w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blog.staging.arc.ht\/wp-content\/uploads\/M-Cube-final-small-19.jpg?resize=234%2C300&amp;ssl=1 234w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blog.staging.arc.ht\/wp-content\/uploads\/M-Cube-final-small-19.jpg?resize=768%2C985&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blog.staging.arc.ht\/wp-content\/uploads\/M-Cube-final-small-19.jpg?resize=799%2C1024&amp;ssl=1 799w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 936px) 100vw, 936px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rather than covering the shopping centre in bright LED lights, the subtle yet eye-catching rainbow fa\u00e7ade is wrapped in pearlescent ceramic tiles that shimmer a spectrum of colors under changing light conditions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Created in partnership with fa\u00e7ade consultant <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mfacade.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Meinhardt Fa\u00e7ade Technology<\/a> and tile manufacturer <a href=\"https:\/\/architizer.com\/brands\/hunter-douglas\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hunter Douglas Architectural<\/a>, every tile was hand-glazed in China and made by applying three layers of glaze onto the ceramic base. Finally, every tile was fired at three different temperatures. This unique firing technique resulted in the magnificent spectrum of colors that ultimately contributed to such a dynamic final design.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-47608 lazy lazy_media_item\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/staging.arc.ht\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/M-Cube-final-small-14.jpg?resize=800%2C1199&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"1199\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blog.staging.arc.ht\/wp-content\/uploads\/M-Cube-final-small-14.jpg?w=800&amp;ssl=1 800w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blog.staging.arc.ht\/wp-content\/uploads\/M-Cube-final-small-14.jpg?resize=200%2C300&amp;ssl=1 200w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blog.staging.arc.ht\/wp-content\/uploads\/M-Cube-final-small-14.jpg?resize=768%2C1151&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blog.staging.arc.ht\/wp-content\/uploads\/M-Cube-final-small-14.jpg?resize=683%2C1024&amp;ssl=1 683w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The rhythmic application of the opalescent tiles not only break up the appearance of the fa\u00e7ade, but simultaneously respond to the light requirements of the interior program. Some sides of the building are completely masked in tiles, while others are marked by an interlocking checkerboard pattern that create a perforated screen. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;We designed the KWG M Cube so that the building continuously displays new patterns and colors,\u201d said Rijs. \u201cDepending on the weather and light conditions and where you stand, the fa<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00e7<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ade might look subtly grey, or it might shine with all the colors of the rainbow.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em>All Images via <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mvrdv.nl\/en\/projects\/chongwenmen-m-cube\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">MVRDV<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><em>Architects: Want to have your project featured?
