Architect <a href=\"https:\/\/architizer.com\/firms\/steven-holl-architects\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Steven Holl<\/a> recognizes this as much as anyone, and one of his firm\u2019s newest projects \u2014 the <a href=\"https:\/\/architizer.com\/projects\/institute-for-contemporary-art-virginia-commonwealth-universtiy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Institute for Contemporary Art at Virginia Commonwealth University<\/a> \u2014 is a manifestation of this mission. The building acts as a vital \u201csocial condenser\u201d for the town of Richmond, and forms a worthy winner of one of four Project of the Year awards as part of the 2018 A+Awards.<\/p>\n<p>Take an exclusive tour through the building with the architect himself, thanks to this stunning short film by our friends at <a href=\"http:\/\/plane-site.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Plane\u2014Site<\/a>:<iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/293199880?autoplay=1\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe>\u201cI think it\u2019s one of our most important buildings, and I\u2019m very grateful and honored to receive this award,\u201d said Steven Holl. The building\u2019s fluid skin and striking cantilevers make it an instant icon that challenges its surroundings.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s really a gateway building,\u201d said the architect. \u201cThis is the busiest intersection in the center of Richmond, one of the most conservative towns in America, but it\u2019s totally radical. It has nothing to do with Richmond brick architecture.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-46818 lazy lazy_media_item\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/staging.arc.ht\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Screen-Shot-2018-10-03-at-1.59.25-PM-2.png?resize=1920%2C1068&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"vcu ica steven holl\" width=\"1920\" height=\"1068\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blog.staging.arc.ht\/wp-content\/uploads\/Screen-Shot-2018-10-03-at-1.59.25-PM-2.png?w=1920&amp;ssl=1 1920w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blog.staging.arc.ht\/wp-content\/uploads\/Screen-Shot-2018-10-03-at-1.59.25-PM-2.png?resize=300%2C167&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blog.staging.arc.ht\/wp-content\/uploads\/Screen-Shot-2018-10-03-at-1.59.25-PM-2.png?resize=768%2C427&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blog.staging.arc.ht\/wp-content\/uploads\/Screen-Shot-2018-10-03-at-1.59.25-PM-2.png?resize=1024%2C570&amp;ssl=1 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Perhaps the most radical element of the design is the building\u2019s metallic outer skin, which is as much a work of art as the exhibits contained within.
