It reflects the sound of the waves. It reflects the sound of the wind.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bridging the gap between natural and urban environments is undoubtedly one of the greatest challenges in architecture. Buildings at the boundary between these contrasting conditions have to be designed with an eye towards radically different contexts, a particularly complex task for large public projects. Undeterred by such a challenge, renowned Mexican firm <a href=\"https:\/\/architizer.com\/firms\/rojkind-arquitectos\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Rojkind Arquitectos<\/a>\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/architizer.com\/projects\/foro-boca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Foro Boca<\/a> concert hall is an iconic addition to the oceanfront in Boca del R\u00edo, Mexico, and a deserved recipient of one of four\u00a0<strong>Project of the Year<\/strong> awards for the 2018 A+Awards.<\/p>\n<p>Take a tour through the building with its creator Michel Rojkind, founder and architect at Rojkind Arquitectos, thanks to this exclusive video by our friends at <a href=\"http:\/\/plane-site.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Plane\u2014Site<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/289300636?autoplay=1\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>\u201cForo Boca is a concert hall for the [philharmonic orchestra], geographically located where the river meets the ocean,\u201d explained Rojkind. \u201c&#8217;Boca del R\u00edo&#8217; means \u2018mouth of the river\u2019, the place where you get the most powerful north winds.\u201d Rojkind and his team sought to produce a highly contextual building that appears as an extension of its site.<\/p>\n<p>The resulting building is composed of a monolithic series of volumes that appear to have risen out of the ground like tectonic plates. These fragments also mimic the distinctive forms of the land\u2019s edge: \u201cWe thought it could be a really nice transition to go from the wave-breaker to a bigger-scale element, and then to complete the city in the back.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-46314 lazy lazy_media_item\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/staging.arc.ht\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Screen-Shot-2018-09-11-at-11.41.12-AM.png?resize=1885%2C1070&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"foro boca\" width=\"1885\" height=\"1070\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blog.staging.arc.ht\/wp-content\/uploads\/Screen-Shot-2018-09-11-at-11.41.12-AM.png?w=1885&amp;ssl=1 1885w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blog.staging.arc.ht\/wp-content\/uploads\/Screen-Shot-2018-09-11-at-11.41.12-AM.png?resize=300%2C170&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blog.staging.arc.ht\/wp-content\/uploads\/Screen-Shot-2018-09-11-at-11.41.12-AM.png?resize=768%2C436&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blog.staging.arc.ht\/wp-content\/uploads\/Screen-Shot-2018-09-11-at-11.41.12-AM.png?resize=1024%2C581&amp;ssl=1 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The journey from exterior to interior was an early driver for the project, public by definition but with a need for intimate, atmospheric spaces within. \u201cConcrete is pure structure, holding the concert hall together,\u201d explained Rojkind. The concrete, supplied by Mexican manufacturer\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/architizer.com\/brands\/cemex\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CEMEX<\/a>, sports a richly textured, board-formed surface.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe cantilever becomes this access point, if somebody is walking in there, they will immediately feel they are protected against the wind, so it becomes a shelter \u2026 then, on the inside, there\u2019s this fluidness. The way people move around the hall, you have this triple-height [space] with the skylight, with light from above dimming these volumes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-46312 lazy lazy_media_item\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/staging.arc.ht\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Screen-Shot-2018-09-11-at-11.41.32-AM.png?resize=1907%2C1067&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"foro boca\" width=\"1907\" height=\"1067\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blog.staging.arc.ht\/wp-content\/uploads\/Screen-Shot-2018-09-11-at-11.41.32-AM.png?w=1907&amp;ssl=1 1907w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blog.staging.arc.ht\/wp-content\/uploads\/Screen-Shot-2018-09-11-at-11.41.32-AM.png?resize=300%2C168&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blog.staging.arc.ht\/wp-content\/uploads\/Screen-Shot-2018-09-11-at-11.41.32-AM.png?resize=768%2C430&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blog.staging.arc.ht\/wp-content\/uploads\/Screen-Shot-2018-09-11-at-11.41.32-AM.png?resize=1024%2C573&amp;ssl=1 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Materiality was also of key concern for the architects, beginning with the building\u2019s monumental exterior. \u201cWe selected the raw concrete, which gives the building a great presence,\u201d said Rojikind.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou have granite; the granite on the exterior comes inside the project. You have parota wood on the outside, and then a different wood on the inside of the concert hall. It\u2019s basically three materials.
