The library design incorporates guidelines intended to uphold the three pillars of the TRPL: leadership, citizenship, and conservation. The building and site will embody these concepts by exhibiting leadership in the arena of conservation, creating a space that is empathetic to its setting and acts as a model citizen and neighbor.<\/p>\n

The building also aims to create a special connection with the site in order to inspire visitors and encourage their engagement with nature. Designing with the site and visitor experience in mind expands beyond the physical aspects of the library. Visitors will experience a multitude of journeys through thoughtfully crafted spaces, as well as opportunities for healing and adventure throughout a site that has been carefully considered from concept to completion and beyond.<\/p>\n

At the center of the library design is an innate respect for the power of the Badlands, and TR\u2019s Library will be centered on a respect for all natural systems on site.<\/p>\n

This library aspires to be a space for personal healing through engaging with nature, just as the Badlands were once a sanctuary for Theodore Roosevelt. We have come to think of the Library as the landscape itself, and to that end, site restoration and an emphasis on natural surroundings become integral to each element of the project.<\/p>\n

The main building, just a part of the larger Library landscape, is meant to both engage and blend into the unique character of the greater site. The interior spaces are disguised and revealed by a grassland covered with roof trails. The site design is focused on managing the land to restore and replenish native ecosystems.<\/p>\n

Practices such as grazing, mowing and prescribed burns will be designed into the Library\u2019s calendar as ecological events. This environmental stewardship will help manage invasive species, encourage biodiversity, and promote healthy ecosystems across the site for visitors to observe and enjoy. The design of the library will be carefully planned to minimize negative impact to the landscape and existing site systems.<\/p>\n

The design of the library\u2019s main building will be carefully planned to minimize negative impact to the existing soils and habitat. Each step of the design, planning, and construction process will maintain a high level of sensitivity to potential impacts on the environment. To go further, the landscape design will seek to enhance the presence of natural systems on site, managing water and habitat connections, and promoting diverse plant and animal communities.<\/p>\n
